  1. Right from the start make sure teaching is indeed the gig for you. You should have gained insights into this when you began working in schools as a pre-service teacher.
  2. Be strict with yourself. Make sure you plan downtime, leisure and family time. Don’t allow workload or the job to rule you or upset that balance.
  3. Seek out ways to fuel your passion for your subject & to determine or test your success as an educator. If you are truly successful you will be satisfied & happy.
  4. Challenge yourself. Continually improve your knowlege. Experiment with what you learn through the reading of research & conversations with knowledgable colleagues & experts.

  1. NQTs often begin their careers in the middle school. Ensure you are aware of the requirements & capabilities expected of students in the senior years of your subject.
  2. Deliberately plan your lessons & units of work to build your students skills & knowledge in the junior years so they are prepared for the demands of senior courses.
  3. Investigate & adopt some of the same pedagogies used by teachers of the senior classes. Build a relationship with these teachers so you can learn from them.
  4. Tell your students the work they do is paving the way for successful completion of secondary schooling. It’s a useful motivator. Expect them to be responsible learners.

  1. Be confident. This comes easily with experience, but being super organised helps. Always have a number of contingency plans ready to employ if a lesson goes off the rails.
  2. Be cool. Never let unexpected surprises or setbacks affect you. Aim for calmness at all times & show this in the way you use your voice & your body language.
  3. Know your subject/s well & extend your knowledge into related areas. Making multiple connections will send the message that what you teach is worth learning.
  4. Observe your students as they work. Don’t be distracted while they are learning. You will learn a great deal about them & they will know you prioritise them above all else.

  1. Know the expectations at your site & work with these. Consistency across the school makes student management easier for everyone (including the students).
  2. Everything you have heard about building relationships with students is true. This takes time but is an excellent investment of your effort.
  3. Relationships must be focused on student wellbeing & achievement, & should be genuine & professional. A mature approach from you sets the standard.
  4. Be fair, do not discriminate, give in to preconceived knowledge of students or make snap decisions. Think through management issues carefully & ask for advice if needed.
  5. Be confident and ensure students are aware of your standards by modelling these yourself. Your respectful handling of them will pay dividends.

  1. Plan your time carefully so that you make allowances for all of your responsibilities. This includes time for rest, exercise and connecting with friends & family.
  2. Aim to begin your day early and finish later than student dismissal. Mornings are good for checking emails, afternoons for marking & preparation.
  3. You will need to make personal time available for work. Build this time into your weekends but don’t allow this to interfere with social events, rest or exercise.
  4. Use some of your holidays for work but be flexible & use times when the weather is unsuitable to go out or you have no plans. Never say ‘no’ to an invitation because of work.
  5. Set up a permanent workspace at home that is seperate from your living…

  1. Use the staffroom during your breaks. It is the first place where you will begin to gain an understanding of your schools culture.
  2. Sit in a different place each time you use the staffroom for the first few weeks. This is an excellent way to get to know other staff who are all part of your new team.
  3. If you are made to feel unwelcome by any ‘group’ in the staffroom, persevere with them. Choose to sit with them at least three times before deciding to leave them alone.
  4. You will find your preferred group. While that’s fabulous, at least once a week sit with a different group & also try sitting by yourself (see who comes to you).

1: Most students will arrive motivated to participate but don’t make the mistake of believing this makes teaching art easy. Students can have unrealistic expectations.

2: Demonstrate the skills you want them to learn. Participate yourself in the learning activities you set. Work alongside of your students.

3: Cultivate a positive learning environment where students see you modelling the language they should use when talking about art works.

4: When drawing choose to use ink pens instead of graphite pencils on occasions. When using graphite don’t always have erasers available.

5: Encourage students to keep all work in their folio, even that deemed unworthy. Teach them to annotate, reflecting on their work, recording ideas & areas for improvement.

1: In the early days meet as many other staff members as possible. Learn their names, their role and engage in conversation with them so they get to know you.

2: Begin thinking about who on staff are the well respected teachers, the good practitioners, the ones achieving good results & who have eager, satisfied, settled students.

3: Cultivate a professional relationship with these teachers. Ask them questions, join in with their conversations & ask to observe some of their lessons.

4: Discuss what you observe. Delve deeply into how they prepare for their classes, how they cater for student needs, how they design their learning tasks & assess outcomes.

1: You should be welcomed into the school prior to your first teaching day for an orientation program, meet with key staff & curriculum coordinators & complete a WH&S induction.

2: Ask for your timetable & get someone to help you decode or make sense of it. Ask for class lists with a photo of each student (if possible).

3: Begin the process of befriending other staff. Take note of the names of everyone you meet and their role.

4: Visit each classroom you will use so you are familiar with resources, including technology available & layout.
